Mozambique is a coastal nation located in southeastern Africa, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east and sharing land borders with several countries, including Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and South Africa
Mozambique has made great gains over the years, with a life expectancy rising from 38% in 1980 to 59% today. While this figure is improving, it is far from the 83% life expectancy we experience in Australia.
However, inadequate water supplies, sanitation and hygiene continue to contribute to significant health issues such as malaria, as does the impact of HIV AIDS which is the number one cause of death in Mozambique.
Women and girls face significant discrimination, often forced into marriage at a young age and deprived of their education. Climate disasters are ever-present in Mozambique, with droughts, floods and cyclones impacting people’s livelihoods and causing food insecurity. Civil unrest in the Cabo Delgado region has also had a devastating impact with almost one million people internally displaced within the region.
Our partner, the Anglican Diocese of Nampula is working hard to build safe, healthy, resilient communities through development initiatives that increase health awareness, build livelihoods and encourage women to be leaders.
