Al-Ahli, Gaza’s only Christian hospital, has faithfully served people for close to 150 years.

During the height of the conflict, the hospital took in hundreds of casualties every day. Staff used the hospital church and library to care for patients. When that space became insufficient, tents were erected in the garden.

A ceasefire brought hope that circumstances would improve. However, continued airstrikes, displacement and shortages of necessities mean the demand for healthcare remains immense.

Living conditions are creating further health challenges

The UN* reports that the Gaza Strip is suffering daily airstrikes, even in densely populated areas. Infectious diseases are widespread, particularly in overcrowded displacement sites.

With the cold and wet season drawing closer, flood and weather-related hazards mean greater risk for tens of thousands of people staying in damaged shelters and unsafe buildings.

Displacement has also placed great strain on the hospital, as people who have lost their homes and livelihoods seek treatment and advice.

Some patients arrive at Al-Ahli with chronic illnesses and have gone without adequate care for a long time. Others need elective surgery or specialised healthcare, including breast cancer screening.

Sustaining specialised healthcare

Al-Ahli is also the only hospital in Gaza providing mammography services. For women who need an early diagnosis, it is a critical lifeline. Early detection can make all the difference when it comes to providing treatment in time.

Behind every screening is a woman whose life matters. Maintaining essential services such as mammography is just as important as responding to emergencies.

Hospital director Suhaila explains this commitment and care beautifully:

‘Saving a life is only the first step. The real challenge is giving survivors the chance to live again.’

Meeting these needs depends on the hospital’s surgeons, nurses, specialists and physiotherapists.

Anglican Overseas Aid’s Christmas appeal is raising funds for staff salaries at Al-Ahli, helping the team continue providing medical care and support to everyone, regardless of background or faith.
