Mary, Mother of Jesus
A Love That Endures
Lent invites us to walk alongside Jesus, reflecting on the people who stood at the foot of the cross—those who witnessed His suffering and stayed in the midst of despair.
Among them was Mary, His mother, a woman of extraordinary courage, determination, and faith. From the moment she said "yes" to God’s call, Mary embraced both the joy and sorrow of her role. Simeon’s prophecy foretold the piercing grief she would endure, culminating in her greatest challenge as she stood at the foot of the cross.
There, Mary faced the agony of witnessing her innocent son suffer, mocked and crucified between two criminals. Surrounded by others yet alone in her grief, her unwavering presence reminds us of the strength of love in the face of immense suffering.
During this Lenten season, Anglican Overseas Aid and Mothers Union Australia invite you to reflect on the lives of those who encountered Jesus in His final days. Each week, we’ll explore the story of a key figure whose choices were shaped by faith, fear, and love.
Week 2: Mary, Mother of Jesus – A Mother’s Faith in the Midst of Suffering
📖 John 19:25 – "Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene."
Mary’s unwavering courage is evident throughout her life, from her first "yes" to God’s call to her presence at the foot of the cross. As a young mother, she endured the uncertainty and danger of bringing Jesus into the world.
At the crucifixion, Mary’s love and loyalty were undeniable. Despite the danger of associating with someone condemned as a criminal, she chose to remain close to her son, standing firm as soldiers mocked Him and others turned away. Her courage to stay, even in her helplessness, speaks to the profound depth of a mother’s love.
Today, Mary’s story challenges us to reflect on the resilience of mothers and caregivers in the face of unimaginable hardship. Around the world, many parents endure the pain of watching their children suffer due to war, poverty, and displacement.
Mary reminds us that standing in solidarity with those in need—showing compassion, offering support, and advocating for justice—matters deeply.
Her witness also calls us to reflect on how we respond to suffering. Are we willing to stand beside those who grieve, even when it feels uncomfortable? Can we, like Mary, stay present in moments of profound sorrow and offer love without conditions?
