Economic Resilience in Sri Lanka

With up to a third of the population grappling with food insecurity, economic resilience has become not just a goal but a necessity for survival.

Recognising the need for immediate and sustainable solutions, Anglican Overseas Aid partnered with the Lanka Evangelical Alliance Development Service to implement the Livelihood and Food Security Program.

This initiative focuses on improving household incomes, building community savings, and fostering independence through Self-Help Groups. This program offers a pathway out of poverty by empowering women to become changemakers in their own lives.

At the heart of the program are Self-Help Groups designed to upskill members and give them the tools needed to begin entrepreneurial journeys. These groups not only offer resources and financial support but also foster collaboration and shared goals among participants. Women, in particular, have embraced the opportunity to manage their own income and support others in their communities.

The program's goal of reaching 150 households to enhance economic resilience is already showing incredible promise. One group featured above has made significant strides, starting their own community outreach initiatives.

These efforts include providing 5 kilograms of rice monthly to vulnerable families and collaborating with a midwife to ensure pregnant women receive proper nutrition. Such initiatives not only improve food security but also create a culture of mutual support and development.

Rachel, a member of one of these groups, proudly shared:

"We hope to create a common marketplace for the sale of products from all the Savings Groups, and hope to use the knowledge we’ve received to work for the well-being of women and children in our community."

The dedication and vision of these women are clear examples of how community-led development can foster resilience and self-sufficiency.

  • 10 new Self-Help Groups established, providing savings advice and support for 160 women.
  • Community members have started their own initiatives to improve livelihoods and support vulnerable families.

The Livelihood and Food Security Program is more than just an economic initiative—it’s a movement toward empowerment, sustainability and hope. Through the dedication of partners like LEADS and the tireless efforts of participants, communities in Sri Lanka are proving that even in the face of profound challenges, transformation is possible.
