Strengthening Wellbeing
in Mozambique
In Northern Mozambique, communities face persistent challenges related to health and well-being, including infectious diseases, gender inequality, and economic struggles.
Recognising the strength and resourcefulness of these communities, the Anglican Diocese of Nampula, through its Towards Abundant Life for All program, has adopted a strengths-based approach to foster long-term change.
At the heart of this program is the Equipas de Vida (Life Teams), a network of community-based volunteers dedicated to improving health outcomes and promoting awareness. These teams work directly with households, bringing much-needed support and education to the people they serve.
Joaquim's Story
For Joaquim, a resident of Northern Mozambique, the Life Teams have become a transformative force in his community. Initially skeptical of the program, Joaquim viewed the teams as simply another church initiative. However, when his young son fell gravely ill, he found himself without the means to transport his child to the nearest hospital.
A member of the Life Team stepped in, offering not just help, but hope. Reflecting on that moment, Joaquim shared:
"At first, I didn’t believe it when one Life Team member offered to help. But soon, three more volunteers arrived, and together, they brought me and my son to the medical centre. My son received the treatment he needed—and his life was saved."
The experience profoundly impacted Joaquim and his family. Moved by the compassion and commitment of the Life Team, Joaquim decided to join the initiative himself. Today, he works to educate his neighbours about health issues and prevention, becoming a voice for change within his community.
Program Highlights
Through the Towards Abundant Life for All program, the Life Teams are making significant strides in improving health and fostering resilience across Northern Mozambique.
- 24,700 individuals, including women, men, and children, now have better access to local health services, consultations, medicines, and follow-up care.
- 42,200 individuals have been trained and equipped with resources to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
By focusing on community-led initiatives, the program ensures that knowledge and resources are distributed effectively, empowering individuals like Joaquim to take charge of their health and their future.
The Life Teams model goes beyond providing immediate assistance—it creates a foundation for lasting change. By addressing health challenges at the grassroots level and fostering collaboration, the Anglican Diocese of Nampula is building stronger, healthier communities. This transformative program wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of its volunteers and the trust of the communities it serves.
‘Towards Abundant Life for All’ receives funding from the Australian Government, through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
