With the economic crisis in Sri Lanka continuing, the vulnerable and poor are increasingly affected.
The crisis has led to an increase in inflation, reaching 76% in June 2022, which has resulted in rising commodity prices and power and fuel shortages.
While vulnerable groups, such as female-headed households, are disproportionately affected, a staggering 58% of families have lost more than half of their income.
At least 56,000 children under five are experiencing severe acute malnutrition, and school dropout rates are increasing, especially among the most disadvantaged – the urban-poor and young children. Many schools are either partially or completely closed, and even for those that are open, fuel shortages are limiting the ability of students and teachers to get to school.
Many vital medicines are out of stock. At the same time, the fuel crisis and frequent power cuts are further affecting the health system’s functionality.
Amid a crumbling economy, many poor families across Sri Lanka are suffering, unable to meet even their basic needs. Our partner in Sri Lanka, LEADS is working with those most at risk, providing support, food and essential medical items to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, the national centre for paediatric care.
You can help!
LEADS is aiming to supply 5,000 vulnerable families with a food hamper each month (AU$60) as they struggle to provide basic essentials for their children during the crisis.
In response, we have already sent funds through our Rapid Response Fund, however, this only equates to the support of 150 families for one month.
It may seem that there is always an emergency happening, but let’s be inspired by Paul’s encouragement to the Galatians to “not grow weary in doing what is right”, and to work for the good of others whenever we have the opportunity.
By donating to the Sri Lanka Appeal through the Rapid Response Fund, you can provide hope in this crisis, making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable Sri Lankan families. We do not know how long the crisis will last, but together we can bring light to these challenging times.
