Women and girls lead a tough life in many places around the world. Despite some successes in empowering women, they still face many challenges such as low levels of literacy, early marriage and lack of access to healthcare.
Hearing stories of women walking days to get to a hospital or – even worse – dying in childbirth, makes us want to help these women in countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya.
Like us, we know you pray for a world in which all mothers, and their children, have access to adequate healthcare.
Anglican Overseas Aid is supporting the efforts of African organisations such as the Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA) in Ethiopia and the Mothers’ Union of the Anglican Church of Kenya.
Women and children are at greatest risk in the hours around childbirth. Mobile communities and uncoordinated service provision means pregnant women are left without antenatal care, so if things go wrong, there are no clear pathways for referral.
Lack of access to maternal and child health care means a high infant mortality rate, high maternal death rates, and poor health and nutrition for the surviving children.
